We Picked 4 GPRs We Consider Among the Most Popular to Help You Get the Best for Your Money
Four systems. Different strengths. One practical question: which ground penetrating radar deserves your investment?
See our recommendationsCompare the featuresBuying a GPR is a major equipment decision. The right system should help you finish today’s locating work and deliver the records your customers expect tomorrow.
We compared ImpulseRadar PinPointR, Radiodetection LMX200 Enhanced, Radiodetection LMX100 and MALÅ Easy Locator Lite for professional underground utility work. Our priorities are useful field capabilities, documentation, package contents and long-term flexibility.
“Most popular” describes our editorial shortlist, not a measured sales ranking. This is a seller’s buying guide based on published specifications, not a side-by-side field test. UCG sells the three recommended alternatives.

Side-by-side GPR comparison
Look beyond the radar image. What you can save, map and deliver determines which jobs your equipment can support.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antenna configuration | 400 + 800 MHz, simultaneous channels | Single-frequency utility GPR | Single-frequency utility GPR | 450 MHz |
| Reusable survey data | Single- and multi-line projects | Saved lines and grids | Screenshot records only | Live profile review and tablet screenshots; no full survey storage |
| Location records | Internal GPS; external DGPS/RTK support | Internal GPS; external GPS support | Internal GPS for geotagged screenshots | No positioning support listed |
| Onboard grid depth slices | Different project workflow; confirm processing needs | Yes: Grid Scan and SliceView | No | No |
| Reporting and export | ViewPoint PDF summaries and KMZ output | Survey exports; EKKO_Project analysis with appropriate configuration | JPG, USB transfer and Wi-Fi mini-reports | Tablet screenshot sharing |
| Manufacturer battery figure | 7 hours | 4–6 hours | 4–6 hours | Over 8 hours; hot-swappable batteries |
| Best reason to buy | Two frequency perspectives plus reporting | Grid investigation and reusable survey records | Focused locating with integrated image documentation | AI-assisted live mark-out |
Published battery times are not comparative test results. GPS accuracy depends on receiver and corrections. A screenshot is not a raw survey dataset. Sources: [1]–[5].
#1 · Our overall pick
ImpulseRadar PinPointR: the strongest all-around choice for mixed locating work
PinPointR combines simultaneous 400 MHz and 800 MHz channels, wireless Android acquisition and location-based reporting. We place it first for contractors who want a flexible field system that goes beyond basic mark-out. [3]
Why we would buy it
Two frequency channels give you complementary views of the subsurface in one pass. ViewPoint supports single- and multi-line projects, field markers, PDF summaries and KMZ files. Those capabilities help turn field observations into records you can share. [3], [4]
What to consider
Dual-frequency acquisition does not guarantee better results at every site. For high-accuracy positioning, specify a suitable external GNSS setup. If your main requirement is onboard grid depth slices, evaluate LMX200 instead.
Better than Lite for: contractors who need georeferenced project records and reports alongside their locating work.

Radiodetection LMX200 Enhanced: buy it for what happens after the scan
When your work calls for saved lines, grid collection and depth-slice views, LMX200 Enhanced is our preferred choice. It offers a more complete investigation workflow than a basic live-display system. [2]
Why we would buy it
Grid Scan and SliceView help you examine how reflections extend across an area. Saved projects support review, while the Enhanced configuration and appropriate software enable further analysis and reporting. [2]
UCG’s G103 listing includes an Enhanced unit, surveyor-grade GPS package, EKKO_Project V6 Reveal Bundle, charger, hard display case, four large wheels and a spare battery with box. Assess that package as a whole when comparing quotes. [7]
What to consider
Its capabilities are valuable when you use them. For a crew that only needs quick mark-out, the additional collection and processing steps may be unnecessary. Confirm the receiver specifications and software license terms.
Better than Lite for: buyers who need to retain surveys, inspect depth slices and deliver more than screenshots.

Radiodetection LMX100: a practical choice when screenshots are enough
LMX100 is the option we would shortlist when the job is primarily locate, interpret and mark, with image records for basic documentation. Its built-in workflow includes geotagged screenshots, USB transfer and Wi-Fi mini-reports. [2], [5]
Why we would buy it
It keeps the task focused while providing integrated documentation tools. UCG’s G101 package lists the unit, charger, hard display case and four large wheels. [8]
What to consider
LMX100 does not save line profiles for playback or provide onboard grid depth slices. It also lacks an external GPS port. Buy it when screenshot records meet your requirements; move to LMX200 when reusable survey datasets matter. [2]
Better than Lite for: a buyer who prioritizes integrated geotagged image records and mini-reports. This is our workflow preference; it does not establish lower purchase cost or better detection.

MALÅ Easy Locator Lite: the weakest choice for a business that needs room to grow
Of these four, Easy Locator Lite is our last choice for a buyer who needs documentation and future flexibility. It offers AI-assisted mark-out, but omits the broader survey workflow available elsewhere in this comparison. [1]
The decisive drawback is its development ceiling: Guideline Geo says Lite cannot be upgraded to Easy Locator Core because the hardware differs. If your business later needs the Core workflow, an upgrade is not available. [1]
Its strengths are real: long battery operation, hot swapping and live interpretation assistance. It also allows profile review and tablet screenshots. Those benefits suit focused mark-out, but they do not change our recommendation for buyers with broader requirements. [1], [6]
Which GPR gives you the best value for your money?
Compare complete working packages. A lower headline price can mean little if you must add a display, positioning receiver, software or accessories to meet the job specification.
- Choose PinPointR if your work benefits from dual-channel acquisition, GPS project records and field reports.
- Choose LMX200 Enhanced if customers require saved surveys, grid depth slices and further analysis.
- Choose LMX100 if you need a focused locating system and screenshot-based records meet the contract.
- Put Lite last if you expect to need positioning or a fuller survey workflow.
Ask for an itemized quote covering hardware, display, receiver, software, batteries, training and warranty. We have not verified a comparable Lite package price, so this guide does not claim that it costs more or has the highest lifetime cost.
Frequently asked questions
Which model is best for professional utility locating?
Our overall pick is PinPointR for mixed locating and reporting work. LMX200 Enhanced is our first choice when grid surveys and depth slices are central to the job. Match the equipment to your deliverables and test it under representative ground conditions.
Is MALÅ Easy Locator Lite the same as Easy Locator Core?
No. They are separate products. Our fourth-place verdict applies to Lite, not every MALÅ GPR. The manufacturer positions Core for the fuller survey workflow. [1]
Will a more expensive GPR always find deeper utilities?
No. Conductive clay, saline ground, target properties and survey technique affect results. Price and displayed depth range do not guarantee usable penetration. [9]
Does GPS mean survey-grade positioning?
No. That depends on the receiver, correction services and field practice. Confirm the exact equipment in the quote. Internal GPS should not be treated as a promise of survey-grade accuracy.
